Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a dare for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate the horror genre: Sit down with your loved one and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its online premiere on Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like conventional body horror, but beneath Together lies a profound meditation about our choices in loving each other.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the two stars bring a special spark to their roles, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The narrative starts when Millie and Tim transition from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A commonly used plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their new home, a storm hits, and the protagonists discover an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a strange force takes hold of the couple. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, blending bits of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and delivers them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He is terrified of the idea of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie never makes one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

The couple confront the sort of issues that come with long-term unions after ten years. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the allegory never feels hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for staying single. Conversely, some couples who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply turn to your partner and say, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can experience at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu as of this moment.
