The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.
The Australian chief selector George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.
There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.
Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on 21 November in the WACA.
Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about his chances of participating.
"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations at play, not only the back issue, but additional elements," he commented.
"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."
Past Concerns
The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.
Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.
The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the Ashes.
He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.
Alternative Arrangements
If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.
The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the national team for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of soreness in his side.
The selector characterized it as a "small issue and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."
"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the initial game as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
