The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.
The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he remained under house arrest pending appeals.
Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.
This involved trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".
Judicial Records Show Escape Risks
In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the magistrate said information from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the former leader's plan to remove the surveillance device to ensure success in his escape.
This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.
His offspring, Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his supporters near his father's house to take place on the weekend.
His son wrote on online platforms on the previous day: Will you battle for your country, or see it all from your phone there on your couch? I urge you to struggle with us."
He said the vigil would be so backers could "pray for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of the magistrate's determination was the chance of the former president's move to embassies near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a background of planning to request asylum through a consular facility", a announcement said.
The judicial paperwork highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brasilia, is located around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.
Global Responses
The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist US President President Trump, causing him to impose a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.
Bolsonaro is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will have a detention review on the next day.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.
They also petitioned that the former president be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he demanded regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other ailments.
Context of Sentencing
The former president was found guilty of heading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his political opponent, President Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plot which encompassed plans to murder the current president and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over the former president's case.
The plot was prevented because it failed to get the endorsement of the military leaders. His successor was took office without issue on the first day of 2023.
But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, many his backers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the national capital, Brasília.
The police stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.
The judges found that the protesters had been encouraged by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, reestablish control and return him to office.
At the time, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also barred from running for public office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 national vote.
