Intense Gales Cause Tens of Thousands In the Dark in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Residents advised to remain inside as severe gales lash the country.

Powerful gales reaching velocities of up to 155km/h (96mph) have left approximately 90,000 homes experiencing outages and led agencies to cancel more than 100 aircraft departures, based on local media.

These gusts are affecting the entire South Island and southern sections of the North Island, according to the weather forecasting body.

Officials in New Zealand have announced infrequent red wind warnings - the top caution category - in core zones such as these major districts.

People have been encouraged to remain inside, stay off roads, and get ready for additional electricity and network failures.

Widespread Impact and Emergency Measures

The power cut appears to be affecting homes mainly in the southern region, though officials report that energy was being slowly brought back.

Domestic outlets have reported that in various locations roofs have been ripped off houses, while trees and electricity poles have been toppled by the winds.

In Wellington, a man was killed after being impacted by a wooden fragment at a popular trail walking spot on Tuesday.

Additionally in the city, a woman was pushed toward approaching vehicles on a street by a powerful blast, in a moment that was captured in a popular vehicle recording.

Flights in and out of the urban area have been halted due to the winds, whereas various routes and public facilities are also closed.

Simultaneously local leaders have announced a emergency situation, to assist disaster response efforts.

Strike Action Amid Extreme Weather

These intense gusts on today come as tens of thousands of educators, medical professionals and government employees take part in what has been described as a "major walkout", calling for higher wages and enhanced employment terms.

However the extreme weather has pressured them to modify some of their plans, with various open-air gatherings relocated inside or called off.

Like conditions are affecting the neighboring country, ushering in a heatwave to the remote areas.

Agencies have issued fire bans for apprehension regarding bushfires.
