The US Justice Department has officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in federal court, challenges the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map represents a blatant attempt to seize control that violates civil rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation represents the most significant counterpunch by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or face resistance, congressional probes and potential further challenges.
