Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that such operations become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
